Denver Museum of Nature & Science

The known universe inside a museum.

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science receives about 1.4 million visitors annually. In 2022, the museum had 1,151,000 visitors, making it the fourth most-visited museum of nature and science in the United States

Immersive Media

2020

In March of 2020 I was hired to create a 3D animation for The Denver Museum of Nature and Science located in Denver, Colorado. The video is a permanent installation piece which is part of the Space Odyssey exhibit.

Create unique branding, animations, and visual elements to educate visitors about the vastness of the universe for a museum that generates $55.7 million in annual revenue.

Challenge

A scientifically accurate, interactive 3D animation was developed to illustrate the scale of the entire known universe.

Solution

With over 2.5 million annual visitors, the video I created provided educational insights to generations of all ages eager to learn about the universe.

Results

Branding

The video branding was inspired by a passion for space, '60s engineering, and aviation.

The fonts and color choices are reflected in the infinite void of space.

UI Concepts

Various UI appears throughout the pieces to help scientifically describe what the viewer sees.

Below are many of the used and explored concepts I generated from scratch.

Posters

Promotional posters help visual the exhibit and spread the word of the Scale of The Universe abbreviated as SOTU.

3D Stills

Rendered in Octane and Cinema 4D.

Behind The Scenes

There were 37 key shots in total, 74 including the transitions in between. I created all the shots using Cinema 4D and Octane. The UI and typographic animations were all done using Illustrator and After Effects.
